About Us

The Modern Canon is a publishing project dedicated to bringing the foundational works of literature, philosophy, and history to modern readers.

Many classic works remain as powerful today as when they were written, yet the language and conventions of earlier centuries can create unnecessary barriers for contemporary readers.

Our editions carefully modernize spelling, punctuation, and phrasing while preserving the meaning, tone, and structure of the original works.

The goal is not to rewrite or summarize these books, but to present them with clarity so modern readers can encounter them as living texts rather than historical artifacts.

Each Modern Canon volume is designed to be elegant, readable, and enduring — a bridge between the intellectual heritage of the past and the readers of today.

“A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say.”

— Italo Calvino

The Problem

Classic literature is not difficult because of its ideas—it is difficult because of its language.

What was once natural expression has, over time, become unfamiliar. Archaic vocabulary, unfamiliar syntax, and obsolete conventions force modern readers to mentally translate as they read. The result is not deeper engagement, but unnecessary resistance to the work itself.

This friction obscures meaning, disrupts flow, and distances readers from texts that were never intended to be inaccessible.

“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.”

— Ludwig Wittgenstein

Our Approach

We do not reinterpret, simply, or update the meaning of the text. Instead, we modernize only what is necessary to restore clarity.

Language is carefully updated at the word and sentence level so that the text reads naturally to a modern reader, while preserving the original meaning, structure, tone, and intent in full. Nothing is condensed, removed, or rewritten.

The goal is simple: allow the original work to be read clearly—as it was meant to be.

“To preserve the past is not to embalm it.”

— Thomas Molnar

Why It Matters

The great works of the past are not relics. They are living texts—capable of shaping thought, refining judgment, and expanding perspective. Their ideas remain as relevant today as when they were written. But for these works to remain alive, they must remain readable.

Modern Canon exists to ensure that foundational texts are not preserved at a distance, but experienced directly—clearly, fully, and without unnecessary obstruction.

“The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

— William Faulkner

Our Broader Vision

Over time, this project extends beyond individual volumes.

The long-term goal is to make the canon of foundational works more accessible across audiences and environments—through thoughtful distribution, educational integration, and continued expansion of the library.

Access to these works should not depend on a reader’s ability to navigate outdated language, but on their willingness to engage with the ideas themselves.

“The heritage of the past is the seed that brings forth the harvest of the future.”

— Wendell Phillips
